cPanel, whether on shared hosting or dedicated servers, allows you to manage a website and email for your domains. To connect your domain name to your cPanel account, it is necessary to update the domain’s DNS settings. For more information on DNS, refer to the earlier article in the Hosting Column. What is DNS (Domain Name System)?

  • For shared hosting, websites that have their domains within the same account as their hosting have these settings configured automatically.
  • For other hosting, You must set up this DNS at the location where your domain name is registered. Adjustments to DNS settings may require as long as 48 hours to propagate throughout the Internet.

Mandatory Records

Record TypeHostPoints to
A (Host)@Your account’s IP address
A (Host)mailYour account’s IP address
CNAMEwww@
MX (Mail Exchanger)@mail.[your domain name], for example mail.coolexample.com

NOTE: Use MX Priority 0

Caution: It is essential to remove any existing MX (Mail Exchanger) entries in your DNS zone file for your email to function properly. The MX entry mentioned above must be the sole MX entry.

If your cPanel site is configured on a subdomain (for example, cpanel.coolexample.com), substitute every occurrence of “@” with your subdomain and ensure the domain name incorporates the subdomain in the MX record.

Optional Records

It’s not necessary to include all of these records in your zone file, but adding them can enable specific features like Autodiscovery in Outlook.
