In this article, discover how to resolve issues with Microsoft 365, Professional Email, or Workspace Email if they malfunction after configuring your Linux Hosting with cPanel.
Linux Hosting using cPanel provides email hosting on the same server where your website is located. This combined service allows you to manage your domain name’s email addresses through your cPanel account.
During the hosting setup, we adjust your domain name to utilize its email service by modifying your DNS settings—specifically the MX records, which dictate which server handles your domain’s emails.
If you are registering a new domain name, this generally isn’t a problem. However, if you have existing email addresses linked to the domain name, altering the MX records will sever your domain name’s connection to the server hosting those emails, resulting in email service disruption.
How to Fix It
The easiest solution is to add the email addresses to your cPanel hosting.
To keep using the same email service, you’ll need to update your MX records.
Change an MX Record
You can modify your MX (Mail Exchanger) records in your DNS zone file whenever you wish. Altering your MX records could temporarily disrupt your email service.
- Log in to your Domain provider account.
- Select your domain to access the Domain Settings page.
- Under Additional Settings, select Manage DNS.
- On the DNS Management page, select the MX record you need to edit.
Note: A domain is limited to a single email service at any given time. For instance, you may choose either Microsoft 365 or Google email for a domain, but it’s not possible to have both email services operating on the same domain. - Edit the details for your MX record:
- Host: The domain or subdomain for the MX record. Most mail servers will use @ for the host, but you can also use a subdomain, such as www or mail.
- Points to: The mail server’s address, such as smtp.hostingcolumn.com.
- Priority: The order in which the record is evaluated and used. Lower priorities will be read before higher priorities.
- TTL: How long the server should cache information. The default setting is 1 hour.
- Select Save to save your changes.
Kindly allow up to 48 hours for your changes to be fully implemented worldwide. Verify that your MX records are configured correctly by sending yourself a test email.
