If you’re experiencing difficulties connecting to your hosting account via FTP using FileZilla, review the information below to assist you in troubleshooting your FTP issue.
1. Incorrect Password
If you do not enter the correct password for your hosting account, FileZilla produces the following error:
Command: | PASS ********** |
Response: | 530 Login authentication failed |
Error: | Critical Error |
Error: | Could not connect to server |
To correct this issue, reset the password for your cPanel or Plesk account.
2. Incorrect User Name
If you input an incorrect username, FileZilla does not generate a specific error.
Nonetheless, if you’re uncertain of your hosting account’s username, you can locate it in the control panel of your cPanel or Plesk account.
3. Incorrect DNS Information
Your domain name needs to be directed to your hosting account. This is done by linking the DNS A record of your domain name to the IP address of your hosting account. If you aren’t entirely sure what that entails, there’s no need to be concerned. You can utilize this information to identify the problem.
4. To Check Your Domain Name’s DNS Information
- Find and note the IP address for your cPanel or Plesk hosting account.
- Check your domain name’s A record, and change it if necessary. You are looking for the A (Host) record with @ in its Host column. It should match your hosting account’s IP address.
5. Other DNS Connectivity Issues
There could be additional factors hindering your connection to your hosting account via FileZilla that you can address by using an alternative value as your Host in FileZilla.
Instead of your domain name, attempt to input the following as your Host in FileZilla, replacing coolexample.com with your domain name in each instance:
- The IP address for your cPanel or Plesk hosting account.
- ftp.coolexample.com
- ftp://coolexample.com
- ftp://your IP address, for example, ftp://1.1.1.1
